Amongst the variety of
materials that have been produced are
diaries, calendars, books or modern and traditonal stories at
various levels of Cornish, verse and
children's books. Books with accompanying
tapes are also produced to assist
beginners. The Kowethas
also produces tea-towels, mugs, car
stickers, pens, cards, T-shirts and other
items for sale, displaying the Cornish
language. If you want to buy a particular
item, have a look at our sales
page.
During the year the Kowethas
organises a number of language days, often
supported by Cornish music or dancing,
which give Cornish speakers the
opportunity of meeting together in a
Cornish speaking environment. For many
people the highlight of the year is a
fully residential extended weekend, the Pennseythun
Gernewek, held usually in
the spring. Other social activities
include guided walks, Yeth an
werin (a chance for general
conversation in Kernewek,
usually held in a local pub) and Dydhyow
Lowender (Fun days where all
events are organised in Cornish).
Regular
English language newsletters are also
produced for the benefit of supporters and
members with little Cornish. The Kowethas
offers a free advice and information
service to any individual or organisation
on any aspect of language including
history, study, family and place names,
naming children, streets, houses, boats or
pets in Cornish, translation and the use
of Cornish in business names and
advertising.
The Kowethas
is closely associated with the running of
Cornish language classes throughout
Cornwall and beyond and provides a
supportive network for those engaged in
learning the language. The Kowethas
maintains links with a wide range of other
cultural organisations both in Cornwall
and beyond, including language
organisations and educational bodies in
other Celtic countries.
The Kowethas
is a charity (no: 1065527) and receives no financial support from any
governmental or other bodies. It is a
voluntary society whose funds are raised
entirely by its members and through sales
and donations. Membership and donations
are open to all who supports the aims of
the Kowethas and
who would like to see the wider use of
Cornish in all aspects of Cornish life and
work.
